After testing our new magic with a freezing potion and determining that we were no longer susceptible to harmful magical potions, we quickly cleaned the blood off the floor. Declan met us a few minutes later.
I turned to Mari. âWhere to?â
Sheâd said their clues had led them to the North Sea, but not where, exactly.
âWeâre meeting Cass and the Undercover Protectorate in Scotland. Cass has our ride, and Jude should have a map.â
âNice work.â
She gave a wry smile. âWe were busy. But I think weâve narrowed the location of the stone.â
âPerfect.â
Mari looked at both of us. âReady?â
I was dressed in my fight wear, and Iâd had a bagelâplus the blood ritual to create new magic. âAs ready as Iâm ever going to get.â
âGood enough for me.â Mari held out her hands, and we each took one, gripping tight.
Her transport magic ignited, and the ether sucked me in and spun me around, then spit me out on a towering cliff where the wind bit into my exposed skin and the clouds hovered low.
My hair whipped around my face, and I pushed it back, turning to face Mari. âNorthern Scotland?â
âGood guess.â
It was where the Undercover Protectorate was located, and it was right on the North Sea. Not to mention, it looked like a Highlander would come striding over the green cliffs any moment.
The sea below smashed in iron gray waves against the rocks, and I studied it. âSomewhere out there, huh?â
âNot inviting, but yeah.â
Magic sparked on the air next to us, and I turned to face it. Jude appeared out of the air, her dark braids whipping on the wind. The leader of the Undercover Protectorate grinned widely, her teeth perfectly white against her brown skin. Starry blue eyes met mine, then moved to Mari.
She shouted against the wind, âYou been waiting long?â
âNo. Youâve got the map?â
Jude pulled a folded piece of paper out of her pocket and handed it to Mari. âFlorian found it in the library. I knew we had something that might help.â
âThank you.â Mari nodded. âWe owe you one.â
âYou donât.â Her eyes turned serious. âAnd Cass explained what youâre up against. If you donât get the gems and you need help, weâre there. Weâre already working on a shield charm for Magicâs Bend. It wonât be able to stand against the Great Serpent forever, but it might slow him. Weâre gathering troops as well. Just in case.â
âThank you.â The sound of a helicopter caught my attention, and I looked up to see one approaching our spot on the cliff. Cass sat in the passenger seat, her red hair bright even from this distance. Next to her sat the captain, a brunette in her mid-sixties wearing badass sunglasses.
âThatâs our ride?â I shouted.
âCass had a connection,â Mari said. âFaster than a boat.â
I nodded, stepping back as the chopper landed near us.
âThanks!â Mari waved at Jude, then ducked her head and ran toward the chopper.
Declan and I followed, then piled into the little machine and buckled in.
The captain turned around and shouted, âIâm Nielson.
